![]() ![]() The earliest known XPS PC, the Dell Dimension XPS 466V, was released in 1994. The first generation of the XPS system was available as either a desktop or a tower case. In September 1993, the first two products in the XPS line were announced, initially as part of the Dell Dimension series. Vernon Weiss was assigned as product manager to lead the project and manage the product marketing, working with Brian Zucker, who led on architecture and engineering. At this time, Dell's annual revenue was less than $500 million, and founder Michael Dell was still directly involved in most decisions. In early 1993, Dell staff met to address how to pursue this emerging market, and it was decided to launch a new high-end product line to compete with Gateway. ![]() At the same time, Gateway (then known as Gateway 2000) led the high-end consumer market in the United States. At this time, Dell primarily aimed its products at businesses rather than consumers.
